Eurocode-7 Past, Present, and Future - Webinar

Presenter: Andrew Bond
Title: Eurocode-7 Past, Present, and Future
Date of recording: 19 December 2011
Duration: 01:38:23

The lecture provides a brief review of the development of Eurocode 7 and - in particular - the way it fits in with the development of other European standards for structural design, ground investigation and testing, and execution of geotechnical works. Some of the more important technical questions relating to the implementation of Eurocode 7 into design practice will be discussed and suggestions made for their possible resolution. Finally, the work that is currently underway to evolve the next generation of Eurocodes will be described.

Risk and Geotechnical Engineering - Webinar

Presenter: Zenon Medina-Cetina and Marco Uzielli
Title: Risk and Geotechnical Engineering
Date of recording: 24 February 2012
Duration: 01:40:56

Professor Medina and Dr. Uzielli join forces to present this 90 minutes webinar as a contribution from the TC on Risk Assessment.

This webinar introduces basic definitions and applications of Risk Assessment to Geotechnical Engineering. The main objective of the webinar is to provide a sound overview of the principles, methods and implications of framing Geotechnical Engineering practice within a Quantitative Risk Assessment.
The proposed approach is based on common practice established within the technical committee TC-304 Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment & Management of the ISSMGE. The webinar includes the homogenization of technical terms of Risk, a discussion on a quantitative framework reference of Risk, the corresponding Risk estimation methods, and presents illustrative case studies of various degrees of complexity

Unsaturated Soils: Basic Concepts and Applications - Webinar

Presenter: Eduardo Alonso
Title: Unsaturated Soils: Basic Concepts and Applications (Part 1 and Part 2)
Date of recording:9 July 2012
Duration: 01:52:31

Unsaturated Soils: Basic concepts and applications, and computational tools and case histories, including embankment collapse, earthdam behaviour and foundation swelling.

Part 1: Hydromechanical behaviour of collapsible and expansive soils

Aims and scope. The webinar will provide a condensed and modern understanding of the hydro-mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils stressing the links among the relevant and unique features of the behavior of unsaturated soils: water retention, permeability, effect of suction on stiffness, volumetric response and strength. Two wide classes of soils will be covered: low to medium plasticity, open structure and expansive materials.
The following topics will be developed in the webinar:
- Geotechnical problems involved
- Testing. Suction control
- Main hydraulic and mechanical variables: suction and constitutive stress
- Mechanical behavior of low to medium plasticity soils
- Expansive soils

Part 2: Computational tools and case histories. Embankment collapse, earthdam behaviour and foundation swelling.

Aims and scope. Geotechnical practice involving unsaturated soils, ranging from foundations on natural collapsible or expansive soils to compacted embankments and earth dams can be approached today by design methodologies and advanced computational tools which are parallel to equivalent procedures in “regular” geotechnical practice for saturated soils.

The webinar will provide a set of concepts necessary to establish a predictive framework. In the second part, case histories will be presented. They illustrate the relevance of unsaturated soils mechanics in practice, the connection between theory and practice and the current capabilities of the models and computational tools.
Topics covered in the webinar are:
- Concepts of mass balance and equilibrium in unsaturated soils
- Initial and boundary conditions
- Examples
- Case histories

An Overview of Geosynthetics and Their Major Applications - Webinar

Presenter: Dr. Robert Koerner (gmatechline@ifai.com)
Title: An Overview of Geosynthetics and Their Major Applications
Date of recording: 22 January 2013
Duration: 01:33:38

This webinar begins with a very brief discussion of polymers and then presents the eight major classifications of geosynthetic materials. They are geotextiles, geogrids, geonets, geomembranes, geosynthetic clay liners, geopipe, geofoam and geocomposites. Some commentary on each is given. Design is mentioned but only insofar as the various approaches are concerned.
Then follows the four major application areas which form the major thrust of the webinar; namely, transportation/geotechnical, geoenvironmental, hydraulic, and private development works. Each of these four are subdivided into specific applications, e.g., filters, wall reinforcement, landfill liners and covers, waterproofing of dams and canals, tank farms, aquaculture, etc., etc.
The webinar concludes with information on geosynthetic organizations, publications, and opinions on the current status and a summary.

Geophysical Tests for Geotechnical Site Characterization - Webinar

Title: Geophysical Tests for Geotechnical Site Characterization
Date of Recording: 08 May 2013
Duration: 1:58:30

The role of geophysical methods in geotechnical and geo-environmental site characterization is continuously increasing thanks to technical improvements and decreasing costs of recording instrumentation. Moreover advances in computational capabilities and refinements in interpretation methods have indeed increased their capabilities and reduced the uncertainties in the interpretation.

A wide range of methods is available to reconstruct geometrical features of the subsoil accounting for different responses of soils as a porous medium and for the characteristics of the pore fluid. Seismic tests provide moreover the advantage of a direct evaluation of the mechanical response of the medium, although only at very small strain levels, with the possibility of testing geomaterials in their undisturbed state on site.

In the webinar, after an introduction of the typical applications, the most common geophysical test will be presented with focus on their capabilities and limitations. Some case histories will be presented to discuss the selection of appropriate methods with respect to the target of the characterization. Finally the advantages arising from the combination of different methods will be introduced and discussed.
